So….this is a topic that gets me
a bit A LOT Fired Up! Here is a pic from the My Plate website. This is the government site that tells you and I what we should be eating, because really that is what we need them spending money on right!?
Yesterday my oldest son, who is in kindergarten, came home with this coloring page:
Yes the schools teach the kids all about healthy eating, based on lots of flawed research and because the government tells them to teach it. The thing that really gets me angry is that my son has no voice when this happens. There are so few resources for our Primal/Paleo kids to see a fair representation that is fun and engaging for them to understand how we eat. Instead he sits with all his friends coloring happy macaroni noodles, dancing bread and a heart hugging a wheat stalk! Ugh….smack head on wall!
Tell me you wouldn’t have been red in the face when that came home from school. Of course my lovely son could tell me all about how he doesn’t like bread because it makes his stomach hurt (yes he has had it, it helps that he knows how rotten he feels when he gives in and eats that cookie) so I am proud of him for knowing what is good for him to eat and what is not. Yet..the happy peer pressure situation at school while they all color donuts with feet bothered me enough to talk to my husband about what we could do to give our son a visual aid, a voice in his classroom and a fair representation of how we eat.
What happened was several hours with my Engineering husband and some software on his laptop…trying to create our own Primal Kid Friendly Plate! We are pretty proud of what we came up with! Our kindergartener was excited to color it in and bring it to school today to show his class how he eats! His teacher let him share his Plate with the class at the end of the day!! He even got into an argument with a friend who insisted that Fat is not good for you and Michael held his ground and defended his beloved butter and bacon!! Go Mini Grok Go!
So…in response to the My Plate we came up with the Kid Friendly Primal Plate!
How about that!? Pretty cool HUH?! All thanks to my lovely hubs, Mike! We want all you awesome Primal Parents out there to be able to use this for your kids too! Please note, this is not strick Paleo. Our kids do eat Dairy, usually just 1-2 servings a day in the form of full fat butter, cheese and/or greek yogurt (which in the summer time is from a creamary that makes greek yogurt from grass fed goats!!).
Here is a PDF version of our Kid Friendly Primal Plate: My Primal Plate
We hope your kids enjoy this too!
Remember you always have a voice! Keep teaching your kids and make it fun for them too! Michael keeps telling me he wants to be a chef someday! I hope he changes the world with that!
